Every Sunday we stack the storage selves, peck boards and place as many clothing items as the rails can take. It’s mostly women who drop in and they are not wealthy. They count their pennies twice. Sunday after Sunday I watch them come in, and the first stop is always at the children’s section. They will make sure their kids are sorted before taking something for themselves. I am posting this specific writeup because for one, all our beneficiaries are in rescue and are women, and two, we sell our items at ridiculously affordable prices so the anyone can afford to buy a pair of shoes or pretty dress.
When you in rescue, the exact principal applies. The kids are just replaced with animals, or the organization's needs. Women full time in rescue will take their last penny and put it towards the rescue’s needs, a dog, cat or vet bill, but not a penny will be spent on themselves. I remember when I was full time in rescue we use to joke: “omw this lady can afford to get her eye lashes done; I can’t even afford to buy a new bra….”. We all laughed but deep inside we all knew it was the gospel truth.
When I stepped out of Bull Terrier Rescue after three years into an office job, I remember my first month. I had no proper clothing, shoes or even makeup. Nothing! I also realized with a shock how I neglected myself physically, not taking care of my skin and hair. Mentally you screwed either way in rescue. The emotional rollercoaster will catch up and will destroy you slowly day by day, but this we accept and push forward. As women we hide emotions well, the outside physical appearance…. not so much.
I am particularly close to each one of our beneficiaries, which as I mentioned, are all women and they are amazing. But I know for a fact that they will not buy that nice top or pair of shoes if it means a cat or dog needs help. I check in on a regular base with our beneficiaries and when I see them, I try not to show up empty handed. A always bring a small gift, a bottle of wine, chocolate ... something simple BUT meant JUST FOR THEM.
If you are reading this post today, can I ask that whatever rescue organization you support – send that lady or ladies on the ground a spoil meant JUST FOR THEM. That bottle of wine might soothe a broken heart of a soul they might have lost that day. A spa voucher that will make her feel special.
Ladies you are amazing ... please do take care of yourself!
